In 1649<\/strong> <\/strong>To St George’s Hill<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>A ragged band they called the Diggers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Came to show the people’ s will<\/strong><\/p>\n

They defied the landlords<\/strong><\/p>\n

They defied the laws<\/strong><\/p>\n

They were the dispossessed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reclaiming what was theirs<\/strong><\/p>\n

We come in peace, they said<\/strong>
\n To dig and sow<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>
\n We come to work the land in common<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>
\n And to make the waste land grow<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This earth divided<\/strong>
\n We will make whole<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>
\n So it can be<\/strong>
\n A common treasury for all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sin of property<\/strong>
\n We do disdain<\/strong>
\n No one has any right to buy and sell<\/strong>
\n The earth for private gain<\/strong>
\n By theft and murder<\/strong>
\n They took the land<\/strong>
\n Now everywhere the walls<\/strong>
\n Rise up at their command.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They make the laws<\/strong>
\nTo chain us well<\/strong>
\nThe clergy dazzle us with heaven<\/strong>
\nOr they damn us into hell<\/strong>
\nWe will not worship<\/strong>
\nThe God they serve<\/strong>
\nThe God of greed who feeds the rich<\/strong>
\nWhile poor men starve<\/strong><\/p>\n

We work, we eat together<\/strong>
\nWe need no swords<\/strong>
\nWe will not bow to masters<\/strong>
\nOr pay rent to the lords<\/strong>
\nWe are free men<\/strong>
\nThough we are poor<\/strong>
\nYou Diggers all stand up for glory<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stand up now<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the men of properall.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To conquer them by love, come in now, come in now<\/strong>
\nTo conquer them by love, come in now;<\/strong>
\nTo conquer them by love, as it does you behove,<\/strong>
\nFor he is King above, no power is like to love,<\/strong>
\nGlory here, Diggers all.<\/strong>
\nand ‘gainst Priests, stand up now, stand up now,<\/strong>
\n‘Gainst lawyers and ‘gainst Priests stand up now.<\/strong>
\nFor tyrants they are both even flat against their oath,<\/strong>
\nTo grant us they are loath.<\/strong><\/p>\n
