{"id":1045,"date":"2005-06-05T08:58:00","date_gmt":"2005-06-05T08:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tashuk.wordpress.com\/2005\/06\/05\/1044\/"},"modified":"2005-06-05T08:58:00","modified_gmt":"2005-06-05T08:58:00","slug":"1044","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanlodge.co.uk\/blog\/archives\/1045","title":{"rendered":"Mc Libel on the beeb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>and about time too<\/p>\n<p>check out BBC2 tonight at 10pm<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/bbcfour\/documentaries\/storyville\/mclibel.shtml\">http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/bbcfour\/documentaries\/storyville\/mclibel.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two contemporary issues that frustrate liberals are the prevalence of fast-food outlets and the continuing outrage of the British libel laws, which stack the odds in favour of the plaintiff, especially when he, she or it is powerful.<\/p>\n<p>Both these preoccupations are neatly brought together in McLibel, a hilarious and engrossing account of the seven years in which McDonald&#8217;s attempted to extract damages from two penniless London activists.<\/p>\n<p>Great moments in the film include the appearance of McDonald&#8217;s executives, defending their fare and the bizarre transformation of the protagonists from neophytes into seasoned cross-examiners. The dramatic courtroom reconstructions were filmed by Ken Loach, and are very funny.
