Liberty: human rights and civil liberties
http://www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk
What Liberty Does:
In an attempt to combat threats to society like terrorism and crime, governments often rush to create new laws. They give themselves new powers – without stopping to sufficiently consider the impact on our civil liberties and human rights. Sometimes they end up sacrificing the very freedoms these laws are intended to protect. Often this process is too gradual to notice – until the moment we’re affected ourselves. Then we realise that our lives are not as private or as free as we thought.
Liberty
Liberty is one of the UK’s leading human rights and civil liberties
organisations. Since 1934, we’ve been fighting to secure equal rights for everyone. But right now, we need the support of like-minded people -who share our concern at the growing number of laws that attack, rather than protect, our rights. Your support will help us defend your rights and freedoms in a number of ways:
We campaign and lobby Parliament.
We expose laws that attack our liberties and work with politicians to correct them.
We test the law.
Liberty’s lawyers take human rights cases to UK courts and the European Court of Human Rights.
We conduct important research.
We analyse where current policies may take us and we publish reports on a wide range of issues – from deaths in custody to privacy intrusion.
We provide advice and training to lawyers and the public.
Many of Europe’s top civil rights experts work for Liberty. We run two specialist advice lines, organise training courses and offer guidance to thousands of people every year.
